New certificates to Help ITI Students Opt for Higher Education

About 18 lakh students who pass out from industrial training institutes (ITIs) annually can now go for higher education as government has approved the policy to give class XII certificates to such students.

Till now, in a majority of cases, academic careers of ITI-qualified youth ended with the course itself.

“The human resource development ministry has approved this credit transfer policy for ITI pass-out students. ┬áNow, they have to pass a test comprising a language of their choice and a subject of a stream that they want to pursue. ┬áNational Institute of Open Schooling will conduct the test. Those who pass the exam will get a class-XII certificate,” Union skill development minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He added the tests will be at the end of final semester so that students don’t have to take a fresh test again.

The credit transfer policy can also be availed even by those who have already passed out from ITIs.
